Blow open your mind with Monsters of Folk’s Temazcal

December 22, 2009

The word “Temazcal” doesn’t fly with basic spell check, so there’s already a good reason to Google it.  A temazcal is a mesoamerican bath house/sauna-type of thing used back in prehistoric days and is apparently being recovered for modern use as a way to cleanse the body, mind and spirit.  If the voices and sounds of Monsters of Folk can’t do that, nothing can.

The Setting:  A good song for the outdoors and/or at nighttime, especially when the stars are out.  Even better if you can at least get a glimpse of the moon while you listen.  “You’re there and then you’re not,” so if you’re not, just stay right where you are for a minute and visualize whatever comes to mind as this song transforms your current surroundings into something inspirational.  Bring back a memory.  Start missing something that isn’t even gone.

Beach House – Take Care

December 21, 2009

This is one of those songs that slows down the earth, puts the world on pause and says, “stop what you’re doing and just listen to me for a minute.”  (Just do it, I promise.)  You can hear your own heart beat and if you keep listening, you can feel it, too.  Anytime you hear the phrase “I’ll take care of you” being sung to you in a voice that sounds like it’s coming from the clouds, it’s automatically perfect.  Take Care brings back the feeling of getting butterflies for the first time or the visions from some amazing, unexplainable dream.  Hence, it fit’s in magically on the new Beach House album, “Teen Dream.”
