Caught Up in the Murdoch

March 5, 2011

Good things are in store for all of us this week. (Literally). Just when Hunkering Down became the new “HD” this winter, March is on a mission to reacquaint us with “Spring.” (Poor Mr. Groundhog allegedly suffered on his big day this year.) Chicago’s Winter of 2011 is straight up *blizzarded, man. Regardless, ’tis the season to discover the next stuck-on-repeat album, preferably a 2011 release. So yeah! I think I found one!

Alexi Murdoch “Towards the Sun” represents Spring in an audible format, geared towards the over-winter mindsets. Haven’t you seen ‘Garden State’? You’ve heard the Soundtrack, right? If not, Google that…duh. In the mean time, enjoy the track selection per below. Regardless of the weather, allow this particular sound to represent an audible fireplace. If you get caught up in the Murdoch, just go with it.

Now the ice is stirring and spring is near
There is no one calling but the sound is clear
Though I’m not yet gone, I’m still not here

Onward!

*Side Bar: For your bucket lists, be sure to coin a term and have it reviewed by a team of “editors” and get it published on Urban Dictionary. Trust me, just allow 3-4 weeks lead time.

Live @ the Acropolis

February 17, 2011

1994 called… on behalf of Yanni.
He wants “Santorini” back.
Turn this [all the way] up.
I’m so serious…

“Is he, like, the man?”

*Best if used on Thursday nights when brainstorming new initiatives and enhancing power fist pumps with your roommates while at least one member wears Rickroll-style sunglasses.

PS – CHECK OUT THAT EPIC FREAKING MUSTACHE.

Dedicated to “Shit my Drew says.”

November was White, December was Grey

January 25, 2011

^ That’s actually the name of a song. It just so happens to be a real life fact if you live in the Midwest. Say Hi…that’s actually the name of a band. A good band. One that apparently has been around awhile and we’re just now finding out about them.

I’ve also included a few other picks by names that all start with the letter “J” (…a coincidence). This post is dedicated to the Sun, who has been hiding from most of us for some time now.

Awww this post is too mellow? Not for long…

This is J. Roddy Walston and the Business ending this post on a fun note with Don’t Break the Needle

Oh You Ain’t Heard Nothin’ Yet

January 11, 2011

How many hipsters does it take to screw in a light bulb? It’s a number so rad, you probably never heard of it. But in all reality, you probably never heard of at least one of the bands below…yet. (Unless you have a tattoo of a mustache on the inside of your finger…)

Go on, let those ears discover…

2011 Listen List – Chapter 1

January 3, 2011

I said I would never get married while I lived in L.A. but there is nothing wrong with California Wives if we’re talking about a good band.  Even better when you find out they’re from Chicago and that’s where you live now, too.

The Generationals – Trust – Album just released today… listen and love.

Broken Records – their second album releases 1/11

Jamie Woon…I can already predict his music being picked up and remixed as a loyal Hype Machine user.

Get stoked for the February release of the new album by the Twilight Singers.

Bobby Long. Get to know him.

A few more to stay on top of…

Hailing from Austin, TX …stumbled upon his music in LA. Hear this: Jesse Woods – Moon Rocks

The District Attorneys – Free download of their new album Orders From…

Deerhunter… Deertick… Deerhoof… don’t get them confused.

The Whigs.

Last but not least… lookout for Alberta Cross… if you haven’t already. Here’s an acoustic ditty.

Just Shh. And Listen.

December 30, 2010

Sour Cream and Jives has just revived, by popular demand, and after the inspiration from a beloved friend, Tara Jean, to share our top “memorable” songs from twenty ten.  Here’s a few good eardrum-worthy tracks from the Tara-Jean selection.  Picture moving cross-county outdoors in the Fall and stopping to dance around for a few with favorite individuals…and maybe some hiking.

Real Estate.  Note the image below that shows while the tune plays.  Pretty sure we drank that same beer and left that same cocktail glass on our own old table.  “Out of Tune.”

Here’s a closer look at Mumford and Sons.  This is why an accordion is in demand within a collection of guitars, ukuleles, banjo and various keyboards.  Fickle your hearts and awake that soul.

Plants and Animals gone subtle.  ”Faerie Dance” – A fucking weird kind of beautiful.  Makes me think of Spring.  “There might be rain, but not for certain.”

Beach House ”Real Love” ….is it getting colder or are we just getting the chills?  (…getting the chills…)  I do not regret going to see Grizzly Bear early enough to see the opening band, Beach House, once.  Listen to the WHOLE thing.  After you listen to the song at its completion, listen to their whole album.  Amazeballs, from start to finish.

Menomena.  Pronounced exactly how it’s spelled.  (According to Animal from Sesame Street.)  I discovered this song while playing ping-pong with a stranger.  Bragged about it on Facebook and a few good like-minded humans were on the same page. :)

Broken Social Scene.  “Sweetest Kill” – if you get headaches easily, or get paranoid easily, don’t watch the video… just SHHH and listen.

Top 10 Memorable Songs for Twenty 10

December 29, 2010

Off the top of my memory in conjunction with top tracks in my iTunes…

1.  The Middle East – “Blood”

2010 memory:  Even though this came out in ’09… it reminds me of 2010, driving from San Francisco to LA…and Coachella.

2. Dawes -”Peace in the Valley”

2010 memory:  Seeing Dawes live for free on a beautiful summer sunset at the Getty Center in Los Angeles with good people all around.

3. Elliott Brood -”The Valley Town”

2010 memory: Driving from Silverplume to Denver on a perfect Colorado day with Tara Jean and Zep.

4. Plants and Animals -”The Mama Papa”

2010 memory: Discovering them randomly online, loving them, and then finding out they were playing at the Wicker Park Fest in Chicago 1 hour after my flight was leaving O’Hare.  Come back, you guys!

5. The National – “Conversation 16″

2010 memory:  Besides the thought of ZOMBIES…I remember having this song on repeat on one of many excellent adventures in the car with Lily, driving to and from dodgeball league festivities.

6. The Avett Brothers“I and Love and You”

2010 memory:  Meeting my new amazing friends/roommates.

7. Mumford & Sons - “Little Lion Man”

2010 memory:  Seeing they were playing at my favorite guitar shop in LA, getting bored of my acoustic guitar, and getting inspired to buy myself a banjo.

8. Delta Spirit - “Bushwick Blues

2010 memory: Listening to this song on repeat at the office.  40 hours of this song in my ears in one week and it still rocks.

9. Voxhaul Broadcast – “Fact or Fiction”

2010 memory: Seeing this DIY band in Pasadena, CA before ever hearing of them and then organically discovering this song on hype machine a few weeks later and freaking out.  I remember the lead singer/guitar player’s hair.  Being in the front row while also gawking at a random banjo player passerby in the distance.  It was a lovely evening.

10. Patrick Watson - “Sit Down Beside Me”

2010 memory: Waltzing around in my Marina Del Rey, CA abode.

Foster The People & 300 Pieces of Art

March 10, 2010
I’ll let the overall art project and the story of Eleventh Wonder be a mystery, but allow me to share part of this year’s “chosen one.”  Eleventh Wonder is beyond just any ‘side-gig’  for artist Brian Jensen, it’s a different approach to visual style that helps dress The Colby Projects, an in-house (literally) “non-capitalized creative outlet” in L.A.  Run by the ebullient Jensen and roommates Mikey Fornicoia and Scott Netzel, this young, three-piece camaraderie knows how to “bru-down” while fusing together talent and innovation, creating real-life stories that also unveil their individual passions that surround art, culture, music and production.

With a little help from some Sugarfree Red Bull, here’s what it looks like to create 300 unique pieces of art, each unique, signed and numbered:

This is creativity hailing from Minnesota, by the way.  That goes for “Pumped Up Kicks,” too, the little jingling spur for the heart you heard in the video by Foster The People, hometown boys of TCP also residing in L..A.
